Where is Kamakhya Temple?
The Kamakhya Temple is in the North East state of Assam in India. It is located on top of a hill at a place named Kamakhya.
How to reach Kamakhya Temple?
Kamakhya is well connected by Air, Train and Road. You can use any of the mode as per your convenience.
Kamakhya Temple by Air
To reach Kamakhya by air, you need to take a flight to Guwahati Airport i.e Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. Guwahati has flights from all the major carriers in India.
Once you get down at the airport, you can get a cab or a bus to reach Kamakhya. Even the Airport AC bus that ply between Airport and Paltan bazaar will drop you at Kamakhya Foot hill.
Kamakhya by Train
Kamakhya Railway station is well connected by major cities. In case you are not able to get a direct train to Kamakhya Junction, you can reach Guwahati Junction that is one of the busiest railway stations in North East as its the gateway to other states in NE.
From Guwahati railway station, you can reach Kamakhya Temple by bus or book a cab. The bus will cost you around Rs.15-20 and there are frequent bus from Guwahati Railway station (also at times called Paltan Bazar station).
If you arrive at Kamakhya railway station, you can reach Kamakhya Temple Gate by bus or cab. Bus will cost you Rs.10/-
Kamakhya by road
By road, you can reach Kamakhya Temple gate and cover the hill part on foot or take your vechicle till the top of the hill.
There are many shared and private cabs available that will take you to the hill top. Sharing cab will charge Rs.30/- for upward journey and Rs.20/- for downward journey.
Note: Sharing auto will till 8 passengers are available, if you are in a hurry you can bargain for full auto/cab as well.
How to get quick darshan at Kamakhya Temple?
Kamakhya Mandir is one of the most important Shakti Peeth in Hindu Religion, hecne every day there are thousands of visitors arriving at temple.
During festivals, the number of devotees increases exponentially as millions of bhakts flock the temple.
If you are looking for quick darshan, you can opt for one of the options below:
- Avoid festivals, there is no way you can get a quick darshan during festivals, even with VIP pass.
- Buy a VIP pass, it will cost you Rs.501/- and will cut your waiting time to around 2hrs
- Do a Mukh Darshan (darshan from far) without entering the main section of temple.
- Visit around 230pm, its less crowded
In case you want to visit the main section without buying a VIP entry, you can arrive at temple early in the morning (around 4-5am) and stand in the queue. The temple opens at 7am, this way you stand a chance of getting a quick darshan.
Kamakhya Temple VIP Pass
In case you want to do garbh darshan and don’t want to stand in queue for 5+ hrs, you can buy VIP pass. It will cost you Rs.501/-
The VIP pass counter is at the left hand side as you enter the temple gate.
Do note that during festivals, even VIP darshan may take much longer time so be prepared. Also note that there is no special time for VIP darshan, the timings are same for both ordinary and vip darshan.
Kamakhya Temple Timings 2023
The temple gates opens for darshan at 7am and close around 1pm. It reopens at 230pm till 5pm.
Note: You can get a food coupon near the entrance of temple, where prasad is served between 1pm to 230pm.
Umananda Temple
It is belived that Kamakhya Devi darshan is not complete without Umananda darshan.
Umananda temple is located on an island near Guwahati, in the middle of river Bramahaputra. You need to take a boat to reach there. The private boat service cost Rs.200/- and the government boat service cost Rs.20!! for a return ticket.
You will be able to do darshan in 30-40 min. There are special aarti’s also done in case you want.
Hotels near Kamakhya Temple
You will find hotels and stays for all budgets near/around Kamakhya temple.
Budget stay options include staying in Dharmshala (approx. Rs.300-500) near the temple or staying in railway retiring room (Rs.500 for AC room) if you are arriving by train.

Who is Kamakhya Devi?
Kamakhya Devi is one of the most important shakti peeth, where Maa Sati’s reproductory body part fell when Lord Vishnu used his sudarshan chakra to disintigrate Maa Sati’s dead body to bring Lord Shiva out of grief.
Who built Kamakhya Temple?
It is not very clear who build the Kamakhya temple but its belived that various kings, starting right fro 7th century, built/renovated the temple during their rule.
How to reach Kamakhya Temple from Mumbai?
To reach Kamakhya Temple from Mumbai, you can either take a flight or train to Guwahati.
From Guwahati airport you can get a cab or Airport bus till Kamakhya foot hill. The Airport AC bus will cost Rs.100 per person.
If you take train (LTT Kamakhya or any other train till Guwahati), better get down at Kamakhya Railway station itself. After getting freshup in waiting or retiring room, take a sharing auto or bus (Rs.10/- per person) till Kamakhya foothill.
From foothill, a sharing sumo will take Rs.30 to drop at the entrance gate. Same will charge Rs.20 and drop you at foothill.

Kamakhya Temple is among the most visited temples in Hindu Religion. Its easy to visit this temple and depending on your inclination you can do the darshan quickly as well.
