How to reach Tawang from Guwahati?

Tawang is a small town in Arunachal Pradesh that is frequented by tourists to enjoy its abundant natural beauty.

Guwahati is the biggest city in North East that is well connected by Flight, Train and road. Anyone planning for Tawang or any other city in North East, have to do it via Guwahati.

Guwahati To Tawang Bus

Good news!! Now you can take a direct bus from Guwahati to Tawang. There are two bus service providers- Network and Zainab.

The service starts from Guwahati ISBT, you can also board at Jalukbari (Near Kamakhya Railway station). Total travel time is around 20hrs and ticket cost is around Rs.1400-1500/-

You can book using any of your favourite bus booking site or using Zainab/Network website. If you are not much of an online person, search for these bus booking office near you.

The bus is Non AC, 2×2 with reclining seats and the journey is comfortable.

The bus do stop for food and tea break. Just keep in mind, if you have motion sickness do keep a candy or clove in your mouth for the whole journey.

You will find Ok types eating place. They do serve veg meals as well as non veg meals (Fish, Chicken, Pork). Maggi and eggs are also available.

Guwahati To Tawang

Guwahati To Tawang by Sumo

You can also take a sharing Sumo from Paltan bazaar (next to Guwahati railway station). The sumo will take bit less time but its not comfortable ride, especially if you end up in last row!

It will cost around same as bus ticket price.

Tezpur to Tawang by Sumo

In case you want to save few hours (4hrs) of travel time in bus/sumo till Tawang you can board the vechicle from Tezpur. Other way can be to break your journey by taking a day or 2 stay at Dirang or Bomdilla (any one).

Both the place have very good weather and attractions are mostly Buddhist Monestory apart from the breathtaking views.

While returning, take a stay at Dirang or Bomdilla depending on what you skipped on your way to Tawang.

Tawang To Guwahati bus

The same operators i.e Network and Zainab run daily bus from Tawang to Guwahati. The bus starts around 11am and takes 20hrs to reach Guwahati.

You can also get down at Tezpur.

There are many operators in Tawang with sighboard indicating booking counter for Network and Zainab or you can book online by visiting their website.

Where to stay in Tawang?

There are lots of hotels and home stay options in Tawang. You will get a decent stay in Rs.1200 (I got this rate in October). The hotel name is Snowland. It was clean and the owner was helpful in getting tourist cab at resonable rate.

You may find a few cheap stay as well but they may not have power backup and you may end up bathing in cold water and left in dark as soon as sun sets.

Where to eat in Tawang?

You will find many decent restaurants where you can get veg and non veg food. There is a Bengali restaurant just ahead of taxi stand that is open till 930 pm otherwise all other places close by 8pm!

The food cost is average (around Rs.150-200 per dish).

Alcohol is very cheap in Arunachal, drink responsibily without causing problems for others. You will not find bars in most places but you can take it to your hotel room or check with restaurant you are having food, they may allow.

Places to visit in Tawang

You can visit following places in and around Tawang:

  1. War memorial: You can walk till this place. Its around 1.5km from Tawang taxi stand. Don’t miss the war movie, its ticket price is Rs.50 for 30min show in the evening.
  2. Tawang Monestory: We walked till here. It took around 40min to reach. This is among the biggest monestory and was established by Dalai Lama.
  3. Bumanla Pass and near by areas: Do not miss this, its am amazing experinece to visit the Indo China border. On the way, you will also cross Madhur Lake, another awesome place. The car (7 seater) cost Rs.5500/- No sharing cab available.
  4. Local sightseeing: You will enjoy the weather and walk in the town.

Yes, Tawang is a very beautiful place. Do visit Bumla Pass and places around it to add to your joy.

Is there a train from Guwahati to Tawang?

No, there is no train connectivity till Tawang, either from Guwahati or any other place. You will have to reach Guwahati or Tezpur by train and reach Tawang by raod.

How much is Guwahati To Tawang Bus Fare?

The Network and Zainab charge Rs.1400-1500. In case you are a big group, you can bargain and get a better deal. Directly booking with these bus will get you instant discont.

Conclusion:

Tawang is a beautiful place, the only way to travel there is via road. Government bus service is not available at the time of writing this blog. I will recommend travel by Bus as its more comfortable.

Taking halt at Dirang or Bomdilla is also an option.
