Goa Budget Trip
I wanted to welcome the new year in Goa this time, so I started looking for travel and stay. The travel and stay prices had sky rocketed and it did not fit my style of travel.
These steps are valid on any other day as well (if I can get it on New Year eve, getting on other days will be super easy!!)
The problem
I stay at Mumbai, and getting to Goa from Mumbai is not a challange. There are plenty of travel options via road and train between Mumbai and Goa but stay is the bigger challenge during the month of December.
The solution
I do a lot of solo travel and have experineced IRCTC retiring rooms at many location and applied the same to get myself a night stay at Madgaon railway retiring room.
Now, retiring room is allocated only if you have a confirmed ticket. So my next challenge was to get a confirmed train ticket which I lucky got in an early morning train coming from further North.
| Pro Tip: If you do not get a confirm ticket from your station till Goa, try a ticket from Ratnagiri to Goa in a train going to south India. Most of the trains get vacant at Ratnagiri and your chances of getting a confirmed ticket is more!! Or you can try booking a ticket from Madgaon till Vasco, its just one station and you will get a confirmed ticket 95% of time!! With the confirmed train ticket (you need PNR), hit the retiring room booking link. Enter your PNR number and select either room or dorm. Do note that there are limited beds and rooms available. |

Note: The retiring room facility is better at Madgaon station. On paper retiring room is available at Vasco and Thivim as well but when I tried Vasco, it gave error no facility available and I did not try Thivim.
| Pro Tip: In case you do not get dorm or room for 12 or 8 hrs, try for 6hrs or less. The idea is atleast you will get a place to crash even for few hours and also a clean washroom to clean up!! You can always grab extra nap at waiting rooms later!! |
Other cheap stay options in Goa
In case you are not abel to get a bed in retiring room, you can try following two options.
Executive lounge at Madgaon railway station
You can get a comfortable sofa, recliner chair or sleeping pod as per rates mentioned in the image above. You can keep your luggage as well (open place).
BATI Goa Home
This place is in south Goa and bit far from the beaches but offers AC room and beds, a fully functional kitchen. You can carry your raw food stuff and cook here if needed or order on Zomato.

If you have a bike/car it will be easy for you to reach BATI House Goa, else you can take a bus going towards Canacona and get down at Jackibandh stop. From there its around 1km of easy walk.
Exploring Goa using public transport
In case you want to explore Goa using public transport, you can use Goa State Transport bus. The disadvantage is you may waste a lot of time waiting for the bus and may find the bus croweded.
To get a bus, reach the main bus station of the area you are in and from there you will get pelnty of options. Eg. I got down at Madgaon, from main road outside station(main gate exit), I took a bus to the bus depot, from there lots of bus leave to all the part of Goa.
The cost of AC bus from Madgaon to Panaji is just Rs.35/- where as non ac bus charge Rs.30 and takes more time!

Is railway retiring room available on all stations of Goa?
No, there are only few stations like Madgaon, Thivim and Karmali where retiring rooms are available in Goa.
Will I always get a retiring room?
A retiring room is not guranteed, it depends on availability. So try to book it as soon as you book your train ticket.
Conclusion:
Cheap And Best Place To Stay In Goa during peak season of November, December and January is something unheard of but in this post I have shared my person experience of how i managed to get a night stay for Rs.400 only for 30 December!
